The Seven Deadly Sin: Gluttony

Gluttony, Sin of over Consuming.

16 ¶ But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows,
17 And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.
18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil.
19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.
Matthew 11:16-19

Interestingly, in latter-days there are certain law that was given to the saints in maintaining their Physical body aligned with the standard of the teachings of the scriptures. The Lord's Law of Health was given by inspiration to help us think more wisely in taking care of the physical body as will as Spiritual. (See this verses from Doctrine and Covenants 89)

A WORD OF WISDOM, for the benefit of the council of high priests, assembled in Kirtland, and the church, and also the saints in Zion—

2 To be sent greeting; not by commandment or constraint, but by revelation and the word of wisdom, showing forth the order and will of God in the temporal salvation of all saints in the last days—

3 Given for a principle with promise, adapted to the capacity of the weak and the weakest of all saints, who are or can be called saints.

4 Behold, verily, thus saith the Lord unto you: In consequence of evils and designs which do and will exist in the hearts of conspiring men in the last days, I have warned you, and forewarn you, by giving unto you this word of wisdom by revelation—

Everything that is too much in our body could be deadly. The scripture also taught us to never run faster than our strength. Though it's not something that we take, but it is something that our physical body couldn't reach beyond its limit. (I will include this topic on the next blog post)

Anyway, Paul also taught as in his epistle about the importance of taking good care of our body.

16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.
- 1 Corinthians 3:16-17

19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.
- 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

I remember when I was younger, around primary age, it was always instructed in School to make a balance diet. During those times, I never think of anything helpful of that kind of sayings. To me at that age, seems like playing guessing games of Go, Grow and Glow foods, but it never stayed in my head to follow such teachings. We even celebrate Nutrition Month and I think it is still celebrated now a days, and how many people are aware of it? Me? No, I don't think I belong to the people who are aware of it, I even think I'll die in a cancerous body. So, who cares about this post anyway? LOL! But the thing is, everything we take in our body if it is too much it could kill us eventually. Don't mind me, I don't expect much. LOL! 🤣🤣🤣

Take this message from “As a Man Soweth” by Elder L. Tom Perry. He make some simple statement regarding the importance of taking care of our temporal body.

John Adams understood the potential of righteous government when he wrote: “Suppose a nation in some distant region should take the Bible for their only law book and every member should regulate his conduct by the precepts there exhibited. Every member would be obligated in conscience to temperance and frugality and industry; to justice and kindness and charity towards his fellowmen; and to piety, love and reverence toward Almighty God. In this commonwealth, no man would impair his health with gluttony, drunkenness or lust. No man would sacrifice his precious time to cards or any other trifling and mean amusement. No man would steal or lie or in anyway defraud his neighbor, but would live in peace and good will with all men. And no man would blaspheme his maker or profane his worship. But a rational and manly, a sincere and unaffected piety and devotion would reign in all hearts. What a utopia, what a paradise this region would be.”

From the beginning with the creation of the world, we have found order in the Lord’s plan. Thousands of years of history have testified to a consistency in his government as he directs the affairs of mankind. Just as surely as John Adams, we know the results of temperance, frugality, and industry. When they are discovered in the actions of man, wealth, prosperity, and abundance are the sure rewards for his efforts. Justice, kindness, and charity always produce peace, love and harmony. The results of gluttony, drunkenness, and lust are clearly predictable. They will surely destroy the temporal body. We also know of the effects of a weakened physical body on the functions of the mind. The destruction of one clearly has the same effect on the other. The results of stealing, lying and defrauding are also absolute. We know the waste of such activities as they literally rob us of our inheritance.

In Wikipedia, the term gluttony simply means over-indulgence and over-consumption of food, drink, or wealth items, particularly as status symbols.

The Lord's law of Health as instructed in this latter-days is so clear that we should avoid things too much that our body can take. Refrain from some substances that were so harmful to our body. Listed are Coffee, Tea, Liquor, cigarette, and harmful drugs. This things are clear in our understanding that has a harmful effect to our health that gradually kills some organs or cause much problem to our health.

In, conclusion. Our body is made of organized group of organs and cells that has it's individual purposes and life spans. Everything that was taken in to our body could kill it, if we take it carelessly. The cause is not instant, but it will softly destroys the system and its functions that eventually takes a man to lose its self-control of refraining, or to stop from being addicted to it. We should care for our body, and don't take this kind of habit too lightly that it eventually take over to one's minds and soul. Our temporal or Physical Body was bond on our Spirit and our spirit will rise with our body in resurrection and be judged according to our deeds if we're doing the right thing in this world, and that includes this subject. John 5:29 say - And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.
