Symphony Underground 2002

About Us (click back to Menu)

Symphony Underground 2002 traces its roots to an earlier formation known as Symphony Drum and Bugle Corps 2000, a.k.a. Symphony 2000, a collective effort that emerged through the collaboration of Florencio Urot Memorial National High School - FUMNHS (later renamed to Mabolo National High School) and several established drum and bugle corps in the region. Among these early partners was D’Youth of Cebu, formally known as Youth Organizations United Through Harmony, whose influence helped shape the group’s initial identity and musical direction. During its formative years, Symphony Underground 2002 was not a single, unified body but rather a convergence of musicians from different organizations, including Talamban DBC, D’YOUTH, and FUDS98 (Fatima United Drummer Society), which was composed mostly of FUMNHS Pioneers.

What made this period especially challenging and remarkable was that many of the members were still actively serving in their respective commercial or independent groups. Despite divided commitments, they worked together to organize Symphony Underground with a shared vision of musical excellence and unity. Over time, however, internal changes began to unfold. D’YOUTH eventually chose to sever its ties with the developing ensemble as it underwent leadership restructuring and gradual disbandment. In the aftermath, Symphony Underground continued to operate with only a small core of dedicated members, independently and without direct assistance from its former parent organizations.

Throughout this transitional phase, FUDS98 remained supportive, together with the other members of Talamban DBC, who later established their own independent organization. These parallel developments occasionally led to misunderstandings and conflicts among different groups within the local (DLBC) Drum Lyre and Bugle Corps community. Despite these challenges, Symphony Underground consistently upheld its commitment to mutual respect, choosing to extend friendship and goodwill even when disagreements arose. This posture of openness and reconciliation became a defining characteristic of the group’s identity.

Over the years, life inevitably led some of the original members to pursue their own paths beyond the organization. At the same time, younger members who had joined during Symphony Underground’s early years gradually matured into leadership roles. These individuals carried forward the lessons imparted by the founding members, emphasizing not only musical discipline but also cooperation, brotherhood, humility, and understanding.

From its humble beginnings with around twenty members, Symphony Underground steadily grew in number and influence. More importantly, it preserved a strong sense of unity and shared purpose. Today, the organization stands as a testament to resilience, continuity, and the enduring power of music to bind individuals together across generations.

The Rest is History . . .
