Goban Board Game

GOBAN GAME

The ancient strategy game of Go · Capture, surround, and conquer.

Welcome! Black plays first. Select an empty intersection to place a stone.
How to play Go

Black plays first. Players alternate placing one stone on an empty intersection. Stones of the same color connected horizontally or vertically form a group.

A group must have at least one adjacent empty intersection, called a liberty. When the opponent removes a group's last liberty, that group is captured and removed.

You cannot play on an occupied point, make a suicide move, or immediately recreate the previous board position (simple ko). Two consecutive passes end the game.

The scorecard estimates area: stones remaining on the board plus empty regions surrounded exclusively by one color. Komi is added to White's score to compensate for Black playing first.
