Role in Conversion

Conversion is a profound change of heart and mind, a spiritual rebirth, facilitated by the Holy Ghost. It is through the Holy Ghost that individuals receive a witness of the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul taught in 1 Corinthians 12:3, 

"No man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost."

This underscores the indispensable role of the Spirit in acknowledging Jesus Christ’s divinity.

Elder David A. Bednar, in his October 2012 General Conference talk, “Converted unto the Lord,” emphasized that true conversion comes through the power of the Holy Ghost. He stated,

“Conversion is an offering of self, of love, and of loyalty we give to God in gratitude for the gift of testimony.”

The Holy Ghost nurtures and strengthens that testimony.

Role in Lessons

How the Holy Ghost Manifests

• Spiritual Gifts

The Holy Ghost imparts various spiritual gifts to individuals for the benefit of the Church. As outlined in 1 Corinthians 12, these gifts include wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discerning of spirits, tongues, and interpretation of tongues. These manifestations help build the Church and confirm the truth of the gospel.

• Personal Revelation

Personal revelation is another way the Holy Ghost manifests. In Doctrine and Covenants 8:2-3, it says,

"Yea, behold, I will tell you in your mind and in your heart, by the Holy Ghost..."

This indicates that revelation can come as thoughts or feelings, often described as a “still small voice” (1 Kings 19:12). President Russell M. Nelson, in his October 2020 talk "Embrace the Future with Faith," taught, “the Holy Ghost binds us to the Lord.”

• Feelings of Peace and Comfort

The Holy Ghost is often called the Comforter, and one of its key roles is to provide peace and comfort. In John 14:26-27, Jesus stated, 

“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost... shall teach you all things... Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you." 

This peace is a powerful manifestation of the Holy Ghost, confirming the truthfulness of the gospel and the comforting presence of God.

• Inspiring Good Thoughts and Actions

The Holy Ghost inspires us to do good and make righteous choices. Moroni 7:13 states,

“...that which is of God inviteth and enticeth to do good continually; wherefore, everything which inviteth and enticeth to do good, and to love God, and to serve him, is inspired of God.”

These promptings encourage us to act in accordance with God’s will.

Knowledge vs. the Holy Ghost

One might wonder if the knowledge we gain through study can or should take precedence over the whisperings of the Holy Ghost. The answer is unequivocally no. Knowledge can support our faith, but it should never replace the guidance and confirmation provided by the Spirit.

Importance of Spiritual Learning

In 2 Nephi 32:3, we are counseled to “feast upon the words of Christ; for behold, the words of Christ will tell you all things what ye should do.” Spiritual learning through scripture study, prayer, and pondering is essential. However, it is the Holy Ghost that ultimately confirms the truth of what we learn and guides us in its application.
Balance of Knowledge and Spirit

President Ezra Taft Benson, in his October 1986 talk “The Power of the Word,” explained the balance between personal study and the influence of the Holy Ghost: 

“...our most important study is of the holy scriptures. Therefore, let’s spend more of our time in the scriptures and the words of the living prophets. Let us saturate our minds with them.”

This saturation, accompanied by the Holy Ghost, enlightens our minds and hearts.
